Brass Hilted Falchion

Above is a photo of our brass hilted falchion with a black stained cornel wood grip. The studs are round head solid brass nails glued and pressed into slightly undersized drilled holes. The cornel wood is incredibly tough and dense and the tapered tang is nearly as wide as the grip. The entire hilt is epoxeed together and the pommel was riveted to the tang with a 3/16 inch diameter brass pin before the glue had time to set. The blade is high carbon 1087 steel, commercially hardened and tempered. This example is approximately 33 1/4 inches long overall. The blade is 26 5/8 inches in length and at .117 inches at the back, it is slightly thicker than actual surviving falchions. It also has a shallow fuller on both sides. The blade width is 2 5/8 inches at 7 inches in from the point, and just under 2 inches near the guard. Our hilt has a 6 inch long cross guard. The banded wooden grip is 4 3/8 inches long. The pommel is a 12 ounce disk 7/8 inch thick and 2 1/8 inches in diameter. The overall weight of the sword not including the scabbard is 3.1pounds = 1.414kgs. This design is not based on any particular historical example. This is a slightly used factory reconditioned sword. It was used only once last summer in a friendly game of Frisbee hack.

Above is a photo of our steel hilted falchion with a brown stained cornel wood grip. The studs are round head nails glued and pressed into slightly undersized drilled holes. The cornel wood is incredibly tough and dense and the tapered tang is nearly as wide as the grip. The entire hilt is epoxeed together and the pommel was riveted to the tang with a 3/16 inch diameter steel pin before the glue had time to set. The blade is high carbon 1087 steel, commercially hardened and tempered. This example is approximately 38 1/2 inches long overall. The blade is 31 3/4 inches in length and at .117 inches at the back, it is slightly thicker than actual surviving falchions. The blade width is 2 1/4 inches at 8 1/2 inches in from the point, and just under 1 7/8 inches near the guard. The 8 3/4 inches long clipped point can be sharpened. Beyond that is a 7 3/4 inch long false back edge. Our hilt has a 7 3/4 inch long cross guard. The banded wooden grip is 4 1/2 inches long. The pommel is a 12 ounce disk 1 inch thick and 2 inches in diameter. The overall weight of the sword is 3.2pounds = 1.452kgs. This blade design is based on a falchion dredged from the Thorpe River. This is a new sword and does not yet have a scabbard. I'll gladly make a scabbard to go with it for an additional $50. This will require several weeks to fabricate.
